Set up in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain is the single TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. At first, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to order john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed 3rd-level names remained active.
